Hynes nets two for Bullets in tie with Misericordia

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./The Pingry School) scored a pair of first-half goals for the Gettysburg College men’s soccer team in its match with visiting Misericordia University Wednesday night, but the Cougars staged a comeback in the second half to knot the score and keep the Bullets from their third-straight victory to start the season with a 2-2 double overtime tie. Gettysburg (2-0-1) controlled the tempo early against Misericordia (0-2-1) with several offensive strikes and hit paydirt at 17:01 when Hynes converted a header pass from senior Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) for his first goal of the match. Junior Rich Kampert (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) also picked up an assist on the play after lining a free kick directly to Menge in the box. Hynes struck again just over seven minutes later, fielding a chip pass out of the midfield from fellow sophomore Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) and beating a pair of defenders into the box, where he placed the ball past the on-coming keeper for his team-best third goal of the 2009 season. The Cougars’ fortunes started to turn 12 minutes into the second stanza when Menge took a penalty kick for the Bullets and missed wide left. Just two minutes later, his number on Misericordia’s side, Joey Scanlon, took a penalty kick and blasted it top-shelf just left of middle, cutting the deficit to 2-1 at 59:31. The visitors knotted the score in the 66th minute when Joshua Yoo raced down the right side of the box and nailed a cross in front of the goal. McKenna Leads Bullets Past Royals in OT

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Kerry McKenna (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) picked the perfect opportunity to score her first career goal at Gettysburg College as her shot in the 94th minute propelled the women’s soccer team to a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Eastern Mennonite University at Clark Field on Saturday, August 30. Gettysburg (1-0) had a fair share of opportunities to jump on the board throughout the contest, taking a dozen more shots than the visitors (17-5), but Eastern Mennonite (0-2) goalkeeper Abi Diffenbach stopped eight would-be goals in regulation. The Royals nearly ended the match in the final minute as all-conference forward Katie Lamm, who scored the team’s first goal of the season against No. 2 Messiah on Friday, corralled the ball on the Bullets’ side of the field and went one-on-one with Gettysburg senior goalie Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity). St. Pierre waited patiently for her moment to strike and timed it perfectly, smothering the ball just as Lamm was about to make a move around. The Orange & Blue went on the offensive early in the extra session as freshman Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) sent a shot sailing wide of the goal in the opening minute. Gettysburg regained possession of the ball and following a Royal foul, set up for a free kick about 30 yards outside the box. The ensuing kick found plenty of bodies at the top of the box before Montague chipped it with her head up and over the defensive line to McKenna. The Bullet junior controlled the ball just outside and in front of the left post and slotted the ball past the keeper’s out-stretched hands and into the bottom right corner. St. Pierre made one save en route to her 16th career shutout. Senior Erin Miller (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the offense with four shots, while Montague and seniors Whitney Odell (Andover, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) and Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) each managed three.
